What’s The Best Quiet Keyboard for you?

Your computer activity will define the type of keyboard you need. Think about how you intend to use this keyboard the most.

  • If you are into gaming, you can choose between two options: Razer Ornata Chroma and Corsair K55. Both are great gaming keyboards.
  • If you spend a lot of time typing, you should probably think of an ergonomic and high-end option like Perixx Periboard 612 and Logitech Ergo. Their design will help reduce muscle strain.
  • If you use your computer only for a few hours during the day, then budget-friendly options might be more suitable, like the Arteck keyboard.
  • If you are working on a computer build or are looking to replace your existing keyboard and mouse, it’s a good idea to get a wireless keyboard and mouse combo, that allows you to save some space and saves you from the hassle of cable management, like Jelly Comb Wireless Keyboard and Mouse.

How To Choose The Best Quiet Keyboard?

How to choose a keyboard

The keyboard you’re looking for depends on what kind of user you are. For example, a gamer might need a keyboard totally different than an office user.

  • Slim Vs Full Size: What type of keyboards you like? There are two main types of keyboards. The first type is a full-size keyboard: it contains the ten-key number pad, typically on the right side after the scrolling function keys. The second kind is slim or compact: it’s not as wide as the previous one because it doesn’t have the ten-key number pad.
  • Switch Types: This is the element that will define whether your keyboard will be quiet or not. The old keyboards were noisy because of their key switching mechanism making clicking sounds with every touch. Some people like this kind of keyboard, and it’s okay. Just make sure you’re not disturbing others.
  • Wired vs. Wireless: if you don’t like dealing with cables, or you don’t like sticking to your desk all day working, then a wireless keyboard will allow you to move around cable-free. And if you don’t like switching the batteries once or twice a year, go with a wired keyboard. Unlike wireless ones, they tend to have a faster response, which is something needed, especially in gaming.
  • Mouse combo: You’ll find in the market packages where the keyboard comes along with the mouse. They are both wireless, and they operate together once connected to the computer via one USB receiver. And You don’t need to set up the mouse separately. I heard that gamers often opt to buy the mouse separately, so skip this point if you are a gaming lover. For the rest of us, this option is great because it reduces also the clutter on your desk.
  • High- or low-profile keyboard: the difference between a high-profile and a low-profile keyboard is the height of the keys. They are slim, and the keyboard isn’t very thick. More often than not, low-profile keyboards are less noisy than high-profile ones.
  • An ergonomic design: this is a must. The keyboard design should ensure your hands’ comfort, especially if you spend long hours in front of the computer typing on your keyboard. Otherwise, some health complications can result in the future, and you don’t want that (no one does). If it also includes a wrist rest, it would be excellent!
  • Compatibility: it might seem obvious, but it’s crucial to verify that the keyboard is compatible with your operating system. Some keyboards are specifically compatible with apple, and some are compatible with Windows, and of course, some work for both.

The following factors are listed specifically for gamers:

  • Backlighting / Lighting effects: almost every gamer loves this feature on his keyboard. And I think there are two reasons for that: the first is that a keyboard with lighting effects allows you to type (or play games) in the dark. And the second is that it’s beautifully and aesthetically appealing to handle. Some come with one color light mode, and some others come with an RGB backlight mode.
  • Anti-ghosting and N-key rollover: this is one of the most important features of a gaming keyboard. It allows the gamer to press multiple keys at once, and all of them respond. The main difference to point out is that anti-ghosting keyboards usually imply a limit of keys that can be pressed simultaneously, while n-key rollover keyboards have no such limit.
  • Advanced Gaming keys: These advanced keys can include programmable macro key functions that allow you to customize your experience for top gaming performance.

And finally, to make sure that you are getting a quiet keyboard, check the description and see if it is designed for quiet use.

Why Is My Keyboard Loud?

Do you have a mechanical keyboard?

Mechanical keyboards are loud. Some of them are loud enough to cause a disturbance in a quiet office setting.

The type of switch that you choose for your computer will determine the amount of noise that it will produce as you work.

The existing switches in the market differ in the way they close their circuits and register different keystrokes.

There are basically three types of switches: Linear switches, tactile switches, and clicky switches.

  • Linear switches are the simplest ones. They feel the same from the moment you start pressing the key until bottoming out. There is no tactile feedback or noise when hitting the actuation point (the point where the keypress gets registered – usually somewhere in the middle). So, most of the time, you will probably bottom out on each keypress.
  • Tactile switches provide tactile feedback when hitting the actuation point. As you press the key down, you will notice a small bump, which lets you know that your key press got successfully registered.
  • Clicky switches provide an additional click sound when hitting the actuation point. The main advantage of tactile and clicky switches is that you don’t have to push the key all the way down. You can release the key immediately after you receive the feedback.

So technically, the clicking sound you hear each time you type on your keyboard is just a result of the key mechanism inside of it.

According to my research, there is no such keyboard that will not produce a sound with your fingers slamming down on the keys. Some keyboards will make the sound quieter or barely noticeable, and some won’t.

To sum up, the type of switch used is a huge factor in determining the keyboard sound.

How Can I Make My Typing Quieter?

Let’s face it! You are not going to throw away your keyboard just because it’s making sounds!

So, what to do? Here are a couple of solutions you can follow to reduce the noise:

  • Install O-ring Rings

O-rings are thick rubber charms that you should slide underneath the keycap on its stem. They will work to catch the blow between the keycap stem and switch, which makes the clacking sound less audible. This video shows you the trick of the O ring. A cheap solution (it costs only 10$), but the owner proves it to be efficient. Watch the video and tell us what you think in the comment section below.

  • Use A Desk Mat

The sound is a mechanical wave. It means that it requires a medium to transport their energy from one location to another.

Without a desk mat, the sound of the keyboard vibrates your desk which amplifies the noise. But with a desk mat under, your keyboard dampens the vibrations and silences everything!

Just try it, and you’ll notice the difference.

Here is a good desk mat I saw on Amazon:

Not only it will make your keyboard sound better, but a desk mat will also make your office space look beautiful.

  • Add Foam Inside Keyboard

Adding foam inside of your keyboard is another way to reduce the noise that comes out of it, when you type.

Okay, bring your tools, and let’s do it!

You will need a screwdriver and some foam (Sorbothane, Neoprene, Shelf-liner, Packing foam …). Start by unscrewing your keyboard, and then place the foam between your PCB and bottom case.

After you’re done, you’ll notice that the sound is less loud, because the foam reduces shaking noises, spring ping noises, and more.

  • Replace Your Switches

If you want an ultra-silent keyboard, getting silent switches will result in the lowest decibel output.

There are other solutions like lubing your switches or modifying the stabilizers …

How To Make Your Keyboard Sounds Like A Typewriter?

There’s something about the sound that a typewriter makes. When you type, there is some kind of therapeutic value associated with the sounds of those keystrokes. Some people like hearing the typewriter sounds when they write, it gives them energy.

I’ve done some research, and I’ve found a way to do that. You can install this chrome extension, and it will give you typewriting sounds while browsing the web.

I believe that there are also programs that you can install on your laptop and have the typewriter sounds all the time. But I don’t want to refer to some software that can harm your computer.

Do I Really Need A Quiet Keyboard?

Are you a student in dorm rooms? Do you work late at night while others are sleeping? Does your baby sleep in the same room where you work? Are you a quiet person who focuses only in calm places?

If the answers to these questions are yes, then you should probably get a quiet keyboard.
